Reasons why I would be an effective Living Donor
Buddy....
I have been active in the donor community since my own
donation, learning much more about the process of donating a kidney
that goes far beyond my own experience. I was also trained to
participate as a donor mentor with a research program that evaluated
the results of using donor mentors on the overall quality of experience
by donors and potential donors. While my own experience was very good,
I have come to see many experiences that have not been as good. I
believe I would be able to answer many questions presented by potential
donors and help them to be prepared for each step of the process.

Reasons why I would be an effective Living Donor
Buddy....
I want to be a buddy to help other people thru the
process. I've got a unique perspective - my wife is my recipient, and
there are special considerations when the donor is very close to the
recipient. I'd be a good buddy for husband to wife or vice versa.

Reasons why I would be an effective Living Donor
Buddy....
I was the first anonymous donor at my local hospital,
donating a kidney in July, 2001. I originally had inquired to be tested
as a donor for a friend at church, but he received a cadaveric kidney
before my testing was completed. I felt a true calling to continue my
interest in being a kidney donor and asked the hospital if they knew of
an anonymous donor program in my area. Coincidentally, they were
finishing putting into place their program (Good Samaritan Program) and
began testing me to participate in that program. I was matched to a
female adult and my surgery was laparoscopic. I recovered very quickly
and with little discomfort (no real pain), and shortly thereafter began
corresponding with my recipient, with the notes and letters being
mailed to the transplant department, read for content, then passed on
to each of us. I was able to meet her face to face 14 months later, in
September 2002. She continues to do well and I am very thankful to have
had the opportunity to help someone in this way.

Buddy....
I had a very positive surgical experience. I worked hard
at making it positive and it paid off. My recipient is a large black
male and I am a small white woman. Everything is possible! Recipient is
going well and I've never felt better, emotionally and physically. I
think I have a lot to share and I'm a good listener.

Reasons why I would be an effective Living Donor
Buddy....
I am a 40-year-old mother of four who donated to my best
childhood friend. By profession I am a counselor and the director of a
crisis center. When I was getting ready to donate I received a lot of
surprisingly negative feedback from people like family, friends,
doctors, etc. I did it anyway (and am glad that I did), but could have
used some more positive reinforcement at the time. The donor services
program was not particularly supportive and I remember wishing that I
had someone to talk things over with who understood what I was going
through. I would love to be able to offer support and encouragement to
anyone who is thinking of being a donor.
